Chefchaouen from Tangier
About two hours each way over the Rif. The format matters more than the operator here: some trips walk you through the medina with a guide, others drop you off for about four hours on your own (guided tour or transfer?).

The ferry leaves from Tarifa on all of these trips, except that the private tour by said tangier tours can also start in Algeciras. From Seville, Málaga or Gibraltar a coach or van drives you to the port first, so check the departure column before you compare the hours (Tarifa, Málaga, Seville or Gibraltar?).

Where to start from
The starting point sets the length of the drive, the hours in town and whether a ferry is part of the day.
From Tangier
About two hours each way on a winding mountain road and roughly four hours in Chefchaouen. Take the guided walk if you want the history of the town, the transfer if you would rather explore alone.
- Chefchaouen with a local guideBook on GetYourGuide
- Chefchaouen round trip, no guideBook on GetYourGuide
From Fes
About four hours each way and three to four hours in town. If you travel on to Tangier anyway, the one-way transfer stops in Chefchaouen and spares you the drive back.
- Shared Chefchaouen trip from FesBook on GetYourGuide
- Fes to Tangier with a stop in ChefchaouenBook on GetYourGuide
Fes is also where many desert tours from Marrakech end: Sahara tours from Marrakech.
From Spain
The destination is Tangier, not Chefchaouen. The ferry day from Tarifa lasts about nine hours; from Málaga a coach drives you to the port first and the day gets much longer.
- Tangier from Tarifa with lunchBook on GetYourGuide
- Tangier from Málaga and the Costa del SolBook on GetYourGuide
- Some day trips are transfers. The JEFF TRANSPORT and IHSSAN TOURS trips from Tangier are drives there and back with about four hours on your own and no guide in Chefchaouen. This site labels both as transfers.
- The road takes a large share of the day. From Tangier it is about two hours each way through the switchbacks of the Rif. From Fes it is about four, which leaves three to four hours in town on a day of twelve or thirteen.
- Lunch is extra on the Chefchaouen trips. None of the trips from Tangier or Fes includes it. From Fes a guide is the exception as well: only 3t Travel adds a short walk, for small groups. Most ferry days from Spain do include lunch, with drinks extra.
- Ferry days from Spain end in the souk. The Tarifa trips close with about an hour of shopping time and the Costa del Sol coach trip stops at a bazaar and a Berber pharmacy.
- On the Spain side, a look at the ratings helps. The Chefchaouen trips from Tangier sit close together; across the strait the scores differ more from one trip to the next. Right now the scores on the Spain side run from 3.8 ★ for Tangier from Tarifa, walking tour and lunch to 4.9 ★ for Private Tangier tour from Málaga or Tarifa.
- Documents and clocks. The operators set different rules for the ferry: Baleària lets EU citizens travel with a national ID card, Viajes Travelsur asks for a passport for every traveller, and Naturanda and VDT need passport numbers when you book. Morocco is an hour behind Spain from late March to late October and during Ramadan; Baleària gives its return sailings in Moroccan time.

The Tangier toursAbout this comparison
This site sorts the bookable day trips to Chefchaouen and Tangier by where they start, and reads each listing for the guide, the hours on site, lunch, shopping stops and the documents for the ferry. When you book through a link on this page, GetYourGuide pays us a small commission out of their margin; your price stays the same.
What travellers enjoyed on these trips
Guests on the trips from Tangier, Fes and Tarifa mostly write about their drivers and guides by name and about the blue lanes of Chefchaouen. One voice from a ferry day would have liked fewer shopping stops.
“I really enjoyed going to Chefchaouen. It’s such a beautiful city. The driver Adil was really nice, and the sprinter was nice. I would book this again and recommend booking it.”
“Najim and this company are absolutely wonderful! He picked us up very promptly and had great information to share on the long drive. The drive was broken up very nicely to get some coffee and see some views, so it felt a lot shorter than it is. He also took great pictures on every stop. …”
“Our guide was Rachid, who was very nice and had a great sense of humour. His English was good too. From the start, the trip was very well organised and the transport clean and comfortable. We enjoyed all the places we saw, and there was no pressure to buy anything. …”
“The trip was pretty much to do our own thing, rather than a group exercise. The minibus had very little legroom to the seats in front, felt cramped and not very comfortable.”
“Said was our driver for this trip and he was amazing! good music throughout and really impressive driving through the mountains. I will definitely recommend this trip!”
“it was amazing, in every espect. one of my favourite and I have done so much already. don't miss Tetouan, amazing place. I had a great time”
“I was quite disappointed that it turned out to be more of a “sales tour,” where you could tell that the guide was taking you to specific stores so that you would buy something there. I wanted to see Tangier, not a demonstration in a dubious oil perfumery. And, for me, a visit to a synagogue also …”

Planning a day in Chefchaouen or Tangier
Should I visit Chefchaouen from Tangier or from Fes?
Tangier is closer. The listings give about two hours each way on a winding road through the Rif, and you get roughly four hours in town. From Fes the drive takes about four hours each way, so most of a twelve- or thirteen-hour day is spent in the vehicle. If you travel between the two cities anyway, a one-way transfer with a stop in Chefchaouen saves you the return leg.
Do I need a guide in Chefchaouen?
Not to find your way. The medina is small, and some of the Fes listings say themselves that you can explore it alone. A guide helps in the first hour with the history of the town, the Kasbah and the quieter lanes. Transfers without a guide leave you more free time instead. Our page on guided tours and transfers sets both side by side.
Can I visit Tangier on a day trip from Spain?
Yes. The shortest version starts at the port of Tarifa: a fast ferry of about an hour, then Cap Spartel, the Hercules Caves, the medina and lunch before the ferry back. From Seville or the Costa del Sol a coach drives you to Tarifa first, which turns it into a long day that starts early and ends late.
Do I need my passport for a Tangier day trip from Spain?
It depends on the operator. Baleària says EU citizens can travel with a national ID card. Viajes Travelsur asks for a passport for every traveller. Naturanda, from Tarifa and from Seville, and VDT from the Costa del Sol need each traveller’s passport number when you book, because the ferry ticket is issued in your name. Visa questions stay with the traveller, so check the rules for your nationality before you go.
Can I see Chefchaouen on a day trip from Spain?
The day trips from Spain on this site go to Tangier and the coast around it, not into the Rif. To add Chefchaouen, stay a night in Tangier and join one of the trips from there the next morning.
What changes during Ramadan?
Ramadan 2027 is expected to fall from February to early March; the exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon. Day trips keep running, but some cafés and restaurants in Chefchaouen stay closed during the day. Morocco also turns its clocks back by an hour during Ramadan, which changes the time difference to Spain, so check the ferry times on your ticket.
When is the best time for Chefchaouen?
Late spring and autumn: May, June and September to November are the most comfortable months. July and August are hot, though the mountain town is milder than the south of Morocco. Winter is cool and often rainy, and March is the wettest month. The lanes are busiest from late morning to late afternoon, which is exactly when the day trips arrive.
Can I cancel if the plans change?
All the day trips compared here list free cancellation up to a day before the start. On the Spain side the ferry depends on wind and sea; the listings warn that crossings can be delayed or that the return may leave from Tanger Med instead of the city port.
